Start small to learn how easy it is to create compelling, colorful landscapes with only minimal detail. We’ll begin on quarter- and half-sheets of paper, wet and dry, using our usual watercolor paints and the “shingling” and glazing techniques. All it takes is a little courage and washable clothing!

 COLOR THEORY II

        GOING DEEPER

dates to come
Color affects our surroundings and our emotions, more than you think. Understanding color theory and classic color schemes/palettes is fascinating even if you don’t paint, and essential if you do. We’ll create a basic color wheel, then explore color harmonies via painting several simple exercises and landscapes in various color schemes.

Dates: Tuesdays, Feb, 3, 10, 17 6 till 8:30 pm

Fee:  $155 for 3 in-person sessions, via cash, Zelle or Venmo.

URBAN LANDSCAPE

Tues. at 6, dates to come

New York City streets have no end of drama: Some images we paint will be detailed, some very impressionist, some layered; we will work in both dark monochrome and colorful palettes. Images to trace will be sent before class. Some examples:

Suggestions for other images are always welcome.

Dates: Tuesdays,

Time:  6 till 8:30 pm in the Studio

Fee:  $155 for 3 in-person sessions, via cash, Zelle or Venmo.

    BIG GREEN LEAVES

dates to come

Leaves are more than just background for flowers — on their own, they can be just as colorful, and every bit as dramatic. From small ginkgo to huge banana leaves, you’ll work on wet and dry paper with negative and direct painting to explore shape, composition, and unexpected color.

    UNDERPAINTINGS

CREATING DRAMA and MYSTERY

dates to come

If you want to move away from tight, controlled paintings with hard edges everywhere…learn to create underpaintings on wet or damp paper for the unpredictable, translucent effects watercolor is famous for. Negative painting heightens the drama.

We’ll start with simple still life and landscape, using this technique that you can then apply when painting from your own photographs.

Want to create a portrait of your friend or family member? Once you learn the simple basics of facial proportions, creating a portrait becomes far easier. You’ll learn to measure and sketch a random imaginary face, then practice painting features and layering washes. I’ll create a simplified tracing from the photo you’ll send me, and you’ll trace and paint your friend/family member in class.
